Why Do I Want to Be an Ann Arbor City Council Member?

The answer is simple: Because I love the City of Ann Arbor, and I think it is time for a "fresh voice" and a fresh agenda on City Council that resonates with Ward 2 residents. I am a Democrat with an MBA, albeit a somewhat unusual combination, and one that does not exist on City Council today. I aspire to bring my business and non-profit leadership experience coupled with specific training in "Voice of the Customer" measurement and management to resolve the City's issues and challenges.

Ward 2 Challenges:

Ann Arbor City Council must implement bottom-line, fiscally sustainable solutions to the City’s challenges. During my years of both business and not-for-profit leadership service, I implemented innovative, yet affordable solutions to serve customers and stakeholders. Our City is indeed a great place to live and work. I want to ensure that the voices of Ward 2 constituents are heard and that our concerns are addressed by the City with practical and feasible solutions. My passion is to serve the community in which I live and which I love. I have spent the last few months meeting with Ward 2 residents and hearing your concerns. Survey Says....

Key to my campaign is my desire to represent the Voices of Ward 2 Constituents. As I go door to door, I have started asking residents to rank your top 3 issues. To come up with the scores below, I've assigned 3 points to every #1 priority, 2 points for every #2 priority, and 1 point for every #3 priority. The top scoring issues to date are shown below. Meet the Petersens

Jack, Sally, Jane and Tim Petersen

I moved here from Massachusetts in 1996 with my husband Tim and 5-week old baby Jack. Tim convinced me that it would be possible to live and work and raise a family all in Ann Arbor. And he was right.

I became a volunteer in this community from the start. I joined the Significant Others and Spouses (SOS) Club at the University of Michigan Business School (now Ross) and chaired a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House. Later, I served as President and Co-President of the Angell PTO and Tappan PTSO. I have been a Board Member of the Ann Arbor Art Center, the Ann Arbor Area Community Tennis Association, and the Racquet Club of Ann Arbor. I am a Past President of the Junior League of Ann Arbor, Inc. and am currently a Board Member of the Neutral Zone and the Huron high School Athletic Booster Club.

We have now lived in the Ann Arbor Hills neighborhood of Ward 2 for 15 years. Tim has successfully launched his own company in Ann Arbor, and we are the parents of two teenagers; Jack now 16 and Jane, 13.  I've become increasingly intrigued by the challenges and issues this city faces. I am not a career politician, but I feel my business and community leadership experience prepares me well to be an effective leader in this city.
